introduction dive Gili trawangan
The Discover Scuba Diving program is perfect for beginners and includes an introduction to the diving equipment, some basic dive theory, and a pool session to learn all the required skills with one of our experienced Instructors. After you have completed the necessary exercises, you’ll be taken out to one of our beginner friendly dive sites around Gili Trawangan to explore the underwater world with a member of our dive team.
The maximum depth for the Discover Scuba Diver Program is 12 meters. We keep the group sizes small at Manta Dive so you will never have more than four divers per instructor.

Discover Scuba Diving prerequisites
This introductory dive is made for beginners, but there are a few important requirements before you join.
- At least 10 years old & able to follow your instructor’s guidance
- Comfortable in the water
- Medical questionnaire: if you are taking any medication or if you have had any heart, lung or ear problems you may need to have your doctor sign off before you can dive. This needs to be arranged before you arrive. Simply contact us for a questionnaire.
You do not need to be a strong swimmer, but feeling reasonably comfortable in the water will help you enjoy the experience more. If you are nervous, let us know before you book. Many first-time divers feel the same, and we will talk you through what to expect.

What you’ll learn
Discover Scuba Diving is not a full dive course, but it gives you a safe and supported introduction to the key parts of scuba diving. You will learn:
- Beginner dive theory
You’ll learn the simple basics you need for your first dive, including how scuba equipment works, how to breathe underwater, how pressure affects your body, and how to communicate with your instructor using hand signals.
- Confined-water training
Before going into the ocean, you’ll practice basic scuba skills in the pool. This helps you get comfortable with the equipment, breathing underwater, clearing your mask, and staying calm before your open-water dive.
- Ocean dive up to 12 metres
Once you’re comfortable, you’ll join an instructor-led ocean dive at one of our dive sites around the Gili Islands, with a maximum depth of 12 metres. Your instructor will guide you throughout the dive so you can focus on enjoying your first scuba experience. Every person will be given a full tank that will normally last around 35-45 minutes depending on how fast you consume your air. You will always return to the surface with at least ¼ of the tank remaining for safety.
- Confidence for your next step
By the end of the session, you’ll have a much better understanding of how scuba diving feels and whether you’d like to continue with another supervised dive, the Scuba Diver Course, or the full Open Water Diver Course.

How we teach
- Group size and supervision: We keep groups small and adjust ratios based on conditions and student needs.
- We keep training focused and calm. The goal is not to rush you. The goal is to help you feel comfortable enough to enjoy your first dive.
- Skills are repeated until you’re comfortable, and the pace is adjusted to the group.
- If you’re nervous about mask skills, equalising, or feeling “rushed,” tell us - these are common beginner concerns and we coach them step-by-step.
Photography & Videography
Want to remember your dive forever? Add professional underwater photography or videography to your experience. A dedicated photographer or videographer can join your dive to capture natural, high-quality photos or videos while you enjoy scuba diving in the Gili Islands. Prices vary depending on group size and availability, with packages starting from IDR 400,000 per person. Ask us when booking for the best option for your dive.

What to dive Next?
Once you have completed the Discover Scuba Diver and most probably fallen in love with the underwater world, you have several options to continue your diving experience and education.
- Go for another dive with one of our dive team, no more theory or pool sessions required. Great if you don't have much time and just want to get back under the water but you will not receive a diver certification qualification.
- 'Dive' straight into your 'Open Water Diver Course' at a discounted rate and get your scuba diving license. Because your Discover Scuba Dive includes beginner theory, pool skills, and an ocean dive, it can count as Day 1 of your Open Water course with Manta Dive. That means you can move straight on to Day 2 and Day 3 instead of starting again from the beginning. The Open Water Diver Course is the most popular dive course we teach in the Gilis and certifies you to dive up to 18 metres anywhere around the world.
- Complete the 'Scuba Diver Course' by completing an additional dive, more dive theory and more skills in the pool. This is effectively half the Open Water Diver Course and certifies you to dive to 12m.
