An intro to the Deep Diver Specialty
Take your scuba diving deeper with the Deep Diver Specialty at Manta Dive Gili Trawangan.
This course is for certified divers who are ready to explore beyond normal recreational depths and learn how to dive deeper safely, calmly and with better awareness. Over 2–3 days, you’ll develop the knowledge, planning skills and in-water confidence needed for deep diving in the Gili Islands, with training dives progressing towards a maximum depth of 40 metres. If you already feel comfortable underwater and want to experience a new side of scuba diving in Gili T, this is the perfect next step.
Deep Diver Specialty prerequisites
To join the Deep Diver Specialty course at Manta Dive Gili Trawangan, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 15 years old
- Hold an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent
- Be comfortable in the water and ready for deeper training dives
- Medical questionnaire: if you are taking any medication or if you have had any heart, lung or ear problems you may need to have your doctor sign off before you can dive. This needs to be arranged before you arrive. Simply contact us for a questionnaire.
Deep diving requires good awareness, control and confidence underwater. You do not need to be an expert diver, but you should already feel comfortable with basic scuba skills before starting this course.
Deep Diver Specialty course structure
The Deep Diver Specialty is completed over 2–3 days, depending on the course option, scheduling and conditions. There are two course options available:
- 3-dive Deep Diver Specialty
The 3-dive option is priced at IDR 3,850,000 and includes gear rental, boat dives and certification.
This option is best for divers who already meet the required course pathway or have previous qualifying training that allows them to complete the specialty in three dives. - 4-dive Deep Diver Specialty
The 4-dive option is priced at IDR 4,800,000 and includes gear rental, boat dives and certification. This option gives you an extra training dive and a more gradual progression through the course. Your dives build step by step, starting around 18–24 metres, progressing to 24–30 metres, and then working towards deeper training dives between 30–40 metres.
What you’ll learn
The Deep Diver Specialty is not just about going deeper. It is about learning how to plan and manage deeper dives safely. During the course, you’ll build confidence with:
- Planning deep dives and understanding depth limits
- Managing your gas supply more carefully at depth
- Understanding how depth affects air consumption and no-decompression limits
- Recognising and managing nitrogen narcosis awareness
- Improving buoyancy control in deeper water
- Descending and ascending safely with control
- Understanding deep-dive risks and how to reduce them
- Responding calmly to potential problems underwater
By the end of the course, you’ll have a stronger understanding of what changes when you dive deeper, and how to approach deep dives with more control, awareness and confidence.

Deep diving in the Gili Islands
The Gili Islands are a great place to complete your Deep Diver Specialty, with warm water, short boat rides and a range of dive sites suitable for deeper training. During the course, training dives may take place at sites such as Shark Point, Simon’s Reef or Deep Turtle Point, depending on conditions and the best option for your course schedule.
Every dive is planned around safety, conditions and student level.
