Ready to take the next step after Open Water? The Advanced Dive Course at Manta Dive Gili Trawangan helps you build confidence, improve your dive skills, and experience new types of scuba diving in the Gili Islands.

Over 2-3 days, you’ll complete five training dives with your instructor. The course includes two essential dives, Deep and Underwater Navigation, plus three elective dives chosen with your instructor based on your interests, experience, and the conditions. Popular specialty options include Night Diving, Nitrox, Underwater Naturalist, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drift Diving, Marine Ecology, Shark Ecology and Underwater Digital Photography.

This course is ideal if you are already an Open Water Diver and want to dive deeper, improve your navigation, refine your buoyancy, feel more confident underwater, or open up more dive sites the Gili Islands and globally.

Once certified, you’ll be able to dive to your new depth limit at dive destinations around the world: divers aged 12-14 can dive up to 21 metres, while divers aged 15+ can dive up to 30 metres.

Advanced Dive Course prerequisites

This course is for divers who already have an Open Water certification and want to continue their training. You should have:

  • Open Water Diver certification or equivalent
  • Be at least 12 years old
  • Completed the required paperwork and medical screening before diving
  • Enough time after your final dive before flying or travelling to altitude

Depth limits depend on age:

  • Ages 12–14: maximum depth of 21 metres. Receiving a Junior Advanced Open Water license. 
  • Ages 15+: maximum depth of 30 metres.
  • Your instructor will plan the course around your age, experience, confidence and the diving conditions on the day.

What you’ll learn

  • Advanced dive theory and dive briefings
    You’ll be assigned online theory to support your course, and receive detailed briefings and debriefings for each dive. The focus is practical learning, dive planning, safety, and understanding the purpose of each training dive.
  • Deep and navigation training
    The course includes a required Deep Dive and Underwater Navigation Dive. You’ll learn how to plan deeper dives, manage depth and air consumption, use a compass, and navigate using natural underwater references.
  • Three elective adventure dives
    You’ll choose three additional dives with your instructor based on your interests, conditions, and availability. Current options include Nitrox, Night Diving, Underwater Naturalist, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Drift Diving, Computer Diving, Marine Ecology, Shark Ecology, and Underwater Digital Photography.
  • More confidence as a diver
    Throughout the course, your instructor will help refine your buoyancy, air consumption, situational awareness, and safe diving habits so you feel more confident exploring the dive sites around the Gili Islands.

Advanced Dive Course Specialties overview

Underwater Navigation: Master the art of underwater navigation, utilizing both compass and natural landmark techniques.

Deep Dive: This mandatory dive extends your diving capabilities to 30 meters, broadening your underwater exploration opportunities.

Enriched Air Diving (Nitrox): This introductory module to Nitrox diving extends your bottom time and enhances safety. It includes training in oxygen content analysis and planning extended bottom time dives using Enriched Air. Completion of an additional Nitrox Dive postcourse leads to Nitrox certification.

  • Who is the Advanced Dive Course in Gili Trawangan for?

    The marine park fee is a separate one-time payment of Rp150,000, made up of the Rp100,000 obligatory entrance fee and a Rp50,000 donation to the Gili Eco Trust.

    Some optional extras, such as camera rental for Underwater Digital Photography, may cost extra.

  • Do I need lots of logged dives before starting the Advanced Course?

    No. You do not need to be an expert diver or have lots of logged dives before starting the Advanced Dive Course. The main requirement is that you already have an Open Water Diver certification or equivalent.

  • How deep can I dive after completing the Advanced Dive Course?

    Your depth limit depends on your age. Divers aged 12–14 can dive to a maximum depth of 21 metres. Divers aged 15+ can dive to a maximum depth of 30 metres.

    Once certified, you can use your new depth rating while scuba diving in the Gili Islands and at dive destinations around the world, within the limits of your certification, experience, and local conditions.

  • Can I choose Nitrox, Night Diving, or Underwater Photography?

    Yes. Nitrox, Night Diving, and Underwater Digital Photography are available as elective options during the Advanced Dive Course.

    Nitrox is a popular choice if you want to learn about enriched air and dive planning for longer bottom times. Night Diving lets you experience scuba diving in the Gili Islands after dark, while Underwater Digital Photography helps you practise capturing marine life and underwater moments.

    Camera rental is available at an extra cost if you choose the photography dive. If you complete an additional Nitrox dive after the course, this can lead to Nitrox certification.

  • Is there much theory in the Advanced Dive Course?

    No. The Advanced Dive Course is mainly practical and dive-focused. You can complete your theory online before you arrive on Gili Trawangan, and there are no exams or videos for this course. Most of the learning happens through dive briefings, in-water practice, and debriefings with your instructor.

  • Are medical forms required before scuba diving in the Gili Islands?

    Yes. Before starting scuba training, you’ll need to complete standard diving paperwork, including a medical questionnaire.

    If your answers show a medical condition that may affect diving, doctor’s clearance may be required before you can join the course. If you have medical concerns, take medication, or are unsure about your fitness to dive, contact us before booking your Advanced Dive Course in Gili Trawangan.

  • How long should I wait before flying after the Advanced Dive Course?

    Because the Advanced Dive Course includes multiple dives over 2–3 days, we recommend planning at least 24 hours between your final dive and any flight. Please tell us your travel plans when booking, especially if you have a flight, fast boat connection, or altitude travel soon after scuba diving in the Gili Islands. We’ll help you plan the safest course schedule.
